Vanuatu church leaders remain opposed to WTO membership

8:18 pm on 3 November 2011

The Vanuatu Christian Council has not given up its opposition to the country joining the World Trade Organisation.

This comes after Vanuatu this week acceded to membership of the WTO.

At its first ever national policy summit in Port Vila this week, representatives of all churches in the country have pledged to lobby all MPs not to ratify the decision.

The council chair Anglican Bishop James Ligo says it is clear the government has not done enough to let the public know and understand what the WTO is all about.

Bishop Ligo says this failure to inform the public is an injustice to the people.

The bishop says he's not against the WTO but he says many countries are already suffering as a result of joining the body.
