In the Northern Marianas, an embattled lawmaker, Raymond Palacios, who's facing drug charges, has resigned as chairman of the House Committee on Education.

Mr Palacios, who is on bail, says his resignation is due to the allegations against him.

Police arrested Mr Palacios last month for allegedly selling 200 US dollars of methamphetamine.

The politician says he believed he should step down to allow someone able to dedicate their time to addressing education matters to be appointed.

Mr Palacios is due in court again on November the 19th.
