The Ministry of Transport in the Cook Islands will conduct an investigation into the sinking of a fishing vessel in the northern waters of the Cook Islands within the next two weeks.

A fire broke out on the Taiwanese fishing vessel, and three days later, on the 30th of October, it sank.

The Cook Islands police commissioner, Ma'ara Tetava, explains what happened.

"On the 27th of October a fire broke out in the engine room and the crew were evacuated from the boat, and there were [other] fishing boats near by who came to the rescue.Everyone onboard were unharmed."

The fishing company has provided a full incident report into the sinking of the Vanuatu-registered vessel to the Maritime Authority of Vanuatu, and the US authorities in American Samoa, where the vessel was based.
