Solomon Islands PM faces vote of no-confidence today

8:50 am on 11 November 2011

The Solomon Islands government appears to be collapsing ahead of today's parliamentary vote of no-confidence against Prime Minister Danny Philip.

This comes after the Finance Minister, Gordon Darcy Lilo, was yesterday reportedly sacked by the government.

Journalist Ednal Palmer of the Solomon Star says three government ministers had earlier in the week resigned along with at least one other backbencher.

"It looks like the opposition is getting on top. And the movement of Gordon Darcy Lilo looks like a further blow to the government. It looks like Mr Lilo is going to move over with a few more."

The Opposition leader Dr Derek Sikua told local media that they have the backing of at least 31 of the country's 49 MPs.
