Fiji readies for first bauxite exports

1:29 pm on 16 November 2011

The Fiji interim government says its first exports of bauxite will be ready by January or February next year.

The mineral is being exported to China.

The mine at Nawailevu in Vanua Levu was opened a week ago by the interim prime minister, Commodore Frank Bainimarama.

He told guests the mine was a direct result of government's efforts to bring about economic growth and modernise Fiji.

The Commodore says the mining sector will create immediate business and employment opportunities, improve living standards, cut poverty and attract economic attention to the region.

The permanent secretary of the Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources, Filimoni Kau, says the mining company is already making real progress.
