Cook Islands police are warning people to keep proper watch over their goods and money following a spike in reports of petty thefts and burglaries.

Thieves have been targeting money and mobile phones, with 455 US dollars stolen from the Hospitality and Tourism Training Centre in Turangi.

Almost 400 dollars and a mobile phone were stolen from a resort, an iPhone was stolen from Muri Beach and another mobile was stolen from a handbag in an Avarua nightclub.

A week earlier a handbag containing 455 dollars was stolen at the rugby sevens competition at the BCI Stadium.

Police inspector Tere Patia is advising people not to carry large sums of money on them unless it is necessary.
