Parliament debate over Vanuatu's accession to WTO delayed

7:40 pm on 21 November 2011

The adjournment of Vanuatu's parliament has meant that MPs have not yet ratified the recent accession by the country to World Trade Organisation membership.

The bill for the ratification was due to be debated this morning but was cancelled due to the adjournment of the session until Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the plan by the Vanuatu Council of Churches, the Malfatumauri National Council of Chiefs and other civil society groups to stage a peaceful demonstration against joining the WTO is still being denied permission by the government.

Members of the Council of Churches have been warned by police not to proceed with alternative plans to hold public gatherings to air their protest against the WTO membership.
