Solomon Islands police increase security at Parliament

10:36 am on 23 November 2011

The Solomon Islands acting Police Commissioner says police will have a higher presence in the capital, as Parliament reconvenes today.

The election of Gordon Darcy Lilo as Prime Minister last Wednesday triggered rioting in central Honiara, which resulted in the arrest of twenty-two people.

The Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation reports Walter Kola as saying police will launch an increased number of patrols by both the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force, RAMSI's Participating Police Force and a Combined Task force.

Mr Kola says warns members of the public should stay away from any disorder or crime.

He says last week's rioting was a sad and regretful situation.
