Campaign in Samoa to enforce healthy lunch legislation

2:06 pm on 30 November 2011

Samoa's Speaker of Parliament says a campaign to promote healthy food in schools will result in the enforcement of existing legislation.

La'aulialemalietoa Leuatea Schmidt, also the chair of parliament's Special Committee for Promotion of Healthy Living, says MPS are getting out to schools to warn students of the health risks of fatty foods.

He says students in the villages generally bring what's available to them to school, such as locally grown fruit and vegetables.

"But in town areas people have a lot of choice and sometimes they buy the unnecessary one. If we see things we're going to start from step one now. Whatever legislation that has been there already we will enforce it and we'll see from time to time to change when we see it's suitable for change."

La'aulialemalietoa Leuatea Schmidt says parliamentarians are also encouraging people to grow their own food.
