Cook Islands police have charged a man with manslaughter, after he allegedly drove into a 60-year-old cyclist in Rarotonga this week, killing her.

The man, believed to be a foreigner living and working in Rarotonga, may have been drunk at the time.

The crash occurred along the main road at Matavera on Sunday morning.

The dead woman, Pauline Atera, was born and raised in New Zealand, but has lived on Rarotonga for the past 20 years after marrying a Cook Islander.

Cook Islands news says Mrs Atera was a well-known triathlete in Rarotonga and was training when she was struck down.

The accused reportedly drove on to the wrong side of the road and directly into the path of Atera on her bicycle.
