McConnel Dowell to relocate American Samoa asphalt plant

8:00 pm on 6 December 2011

The New Zealand construction firm McConnel Dowell is to relocate its asphalt plant in American Samoa after residents complained about the smell.

The plant is near the Veterans Memorial Stadium but early next year it will be moved to a site on airport property away from where residents are living.

Despite the complaints about the strong smell of tar, the company has maintained that it was operating the plant according to local and federal regulations.

Project Manager Basil Ake says the government has increased its rent and royalties for the area where it has its quarry so they have had to downsize.

He says they're essentially trying to slim down.
