Organisers of Papua New Guinea's second annual Human Rights Film Festival this week are calling for the observation of human rights in the country's elections next year.

The five day event being held at Moresby Arts Theatre in the capital will coincide with Human Rights Day celebrations on Saturday.

The United Nations Human Rights Advisor for PNG Christine Saunders says this year's festival highlights nine key issues including sexual violence against women and sorcery related killings.

"Elections and human rights is particularly important here because we're having elections next year. And the message is going to be very much around enabling an environment for people to freely participate in the election without fear of violence. So that's going to be a very important one."

Christine Saunders says the festival is showcasing more than two dozen films as well as panel discussions on a range of human rights issues.
