PNG unions alarmed at political impasse

The head of Papua New Guinea's Trade Union Congress has warned of a public service breakdown if Sir Michael Somare and Peter O'Neill cannot come to an agreement on the nation's leadership.

Michael Malabag says Papua New Guineans are worried about bread and butter issues, as the nation grapples with a political crisis in which both men are claiming to be prime minister.

He says the people are sick and tired of the selfish behaviour by the country's politicians.

Mr Malabag says it is coming to the stage where there'll be a total public service breakdown.

His comments come amid rumours that public service unions are planning a general strike, but he says there's no plan to so do at this point.
