The District Court of American Samoa has sentenced local boxing coach Henry Tavake to one years probation after he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor third degree assault charge.

Tavake punched another boxing official, Nikolao Mageo, in the District Court parking lot last month.

Tavake told the court that he went up to the victim and whispered something in his ear and Mageo responded by standing in a position as if he was about to hit him, so he reacted by throwing a punch.

He says that the incident was a misunderstanding and apologised for his actions.

As a condition of his probation, Tavake was order to attend and complete anger management counseling sessions and pay a $1,000 fine although $900 has been deferred on good behavior.
