Forum sees no change in PNG links despite Somare challenge

2:11 pm on 22 December 2011

The Pacific Islands Forum secretariat appears to give no credence to a claim by Sir Michael Somare that he is the legitimate prime minister of Papua New Guinea.

PNG politics was thrown into disarray by last week's Supreme Court ruling which invalidated the administration formed by Peter O'Neill last August.

However, parliament as well as key agencies still endorse Mr O'Neill who represented PNG at this year's Forum summit in Auckland.

The Forum's secretay-general, Tuiloma Neroni Slade, has declined to spell out who the secretariat is dealing with.

"There has been no change in the official relationship between the Forum secretariat and that particular member government and until we have been advised according to the established protocols, there is no change."
