Loeak draws up new Marshalls government

12:57 pm on 4 January 2012

The new Marshall Islands president, Christopher Loeak, is this week putting together a government following his election yesterday in the new parliament's opening session.

Mr Loeak, who was the opposition coalition's candidate, convincingly beat the incumbent, Jurelang Zedkaia.

Our correspondent, Giff Johnson, says a large number of lawmakers have had cabinet experience over the past four years.

He says a new line-up is to be sworn in next week.

"The new cabinet is expected to be announced possibly by the end of this week or the beginning of this coming week, with the parliament reconvening early next week for formal inauguration and swearing-in of the new president and cabinet."
