Flash flood warning issued for Fiji

6:04 pm on 5 January 2012

The Nadi weather office has issued a flash flood warning for the whole of Fiji.

The duty forecaster says it has been raining across the country since last night, with rain expected to intensify over the next 48 hours.

Samisoni Waqavakatoga says low lying areas will be prone to flash flooding at high tide, which for the next couple of days is at eight o'clock in the morning and evening.

"Not so much the bigger rivers it's near the smaller streams and smaller rivers that will be flooded. There's a high probability of these smaller streams and rivers getting flooded in the next couple of days with this trough hovering over the Fiji islands till Saturday night. Moving to higher ground would be the best act as of now."

Samisoni Waqavakatoga says the trough of low pressure should have moved away from Fiji by Sunday.
