Police seek help after Tahiti bank robbery

4:15 pm on 6 January 2012

Police in French Polynesia have appealed to the public for help to track down and arrest a bank robber.

The suspect threatened staff at the Banque de Polynesie in Pirae with a knife and managed to escape in a blue Mini Cooper with just over 10,000 US dollars.

The robbery coincided with one in central Papeete where a man armed with a knife was still inside the Socredo Bank when nearby police arrested him.

Bank robberies in French Polynesia are extremely rare.

Local television says if convicted, a robber faces at least ten years in jail.
