Reports from French Polynesia say a man caught trying to rob a Papeete bank is to be given a mental health check.

He was arrested inside the Socredo Bank last Tuesday when he threatened staff with a knife while demanding money.

Press reports say a medical examination will determine under what conditions he will be locked up.

The attempted robbery coincided with another in Pirae where a man escaped with more than 10,000 US dollars.

A suspect has been arrested at his home after his getaway vehicle was traced.
