American Samoa hospital plans layoffs

8:54 am on 10 January 2012

The LBJ hospital in American Samoa may have to lay off staff, if it doesn't receive the remaining subsidy promised by the Government for the first quarter of Fiscal year 2012.

The hospital announced two weeks ago it is delaying a planned rate increase until January 14.

The chairman of the Hospital Authority Board Moananu Va, says ASG has not received the promised subsidies, which would bring the government current for the first quarter.

In the meantime the hospital has submitted a 15 million US dollar supplemental budget request to the government.

The hospital needs $1.9 million by or before January 20th to fund hospital operations and bring 'must pay' vendors current.
