The people of Kiribati go to the polls today to elect a new president after the vote was deferred for two weeks to avoid Christmas and New Year festivities.

The country's parliament, elected in November, nominated three candidates for President.

The current President Anote Tong is standing for a third term and is opposed by two opposition MPs Dr Tetaua Taitai and Rimeta Beniamina.
