American Samoa lawmaker says 14 too young for marriage

An American Samoa lawmaker says 14 years-old women are too young to wed.

Lemapu Suiaunoa Talo is supporting a bill seeking to change the legal age women can get married from age 14 to at least 17.

He says if women get married at the current legal age, they risk losing the chance of finishing high school and furthering their studies.

"We should change the law - up to 17. Because they have a life to focus on. And that is the married life. They have to focus on their married life, taking care of their husband."

Lemapu Suiaunoa Talo says the bill is currently being reviewed by the Ways and Means Committee in American Samoa.
