Kiribati's Tong confident of Parliament's support

The newly re-elected president of Kiribati says he believes he can win enough support to have a parliamentary majority in the next few days.

Anote Tong won his third and final term as president, with just over 40% of the vote, beating his nearest challenger, Tetaua Taitai by more than 2,000 votes.

Mr Tong says his party has less than a majority following November's election, but he believes that won't get in the way of achieving his agenda.

"I believe that we share the same objective, and that's to serve the people that we have promised to serve, and hopefully, in spite of all the discussions, the arguments, the debate, we will be able to come to agreement on what is best for the nation at the end of the day."
