Re-elected Kiribati president welcomes Fiji PER lifting

1:31 pm on 18 January 2012

Kiribati's President, Anote Tong, who was returned to power at the weekend, has welcomed Fiji's lifting of the Public Emergency Regulations.

A new public order decree gives the interim regime extended powers and allows for security operations whose outcome cannot be challenged in court.

It was made public just days after the regime announced the lifting of the public emergency regulations.

Anote Tong, who has been outspoken about Fiji's re-admission to the Pacific Islands Forum, says it has always been anticipated that things will progress.

"I think sometimes we just become to impatient. And I have always believed that life will carry on, life will re-adjust itself, and stability will in the end prevail."
