Sport: Fiji looking to sharpen up fitness ahead of Wellington 7s

Fitness has been a big focus for the Fiji sevens team ahead of the Wellington and Las Vegas legs of the IRB World Series, which returns to action in February following a two month break.

Fiji won the opening tournament in Australia but their performances fell away in Dubai and South Africa.

Assistant coach Eddie Waqa says the Uprising Sevens tournament, which finishes today in Suva, is a good opportunity for the shadow team, playing as the Fiji Barbarians, to work on a few things ahead of Wellington.

"Our last preparation when we came to the Gold Coast wasn't really good and now we managed to come back and spend three weeks focusing on fitness and at the same time we managed to look at some the plays that really weren't done during the last few tournaments. We're looking to improve on our set play and especially on winning possession on the restarts and especially in the rucking area."

Two members of the Barbarians team, Dale Tonowai and Nemasi Nagusa, won't be considered for the Wellington tournament due to the travel ban on players connected to the Fiji military.
