Niue police believe arson and shooting linked

6:12 pm on 24 January 2012

Niue's chief of police is appealing to the leaders of Hikutavake village to try to put a stop to further acts of retaliation, following a shooting on Sunday morning.

A young man is in hospital with moderate injuries after being shot with a pellet gun.

A 21-year-old man has been charged with careless use of a firearm and causing actual bodily harm, while the police are waiting to question the victim in relation to an arson in the village around the same time.

There has been a spate of arsons in the area and the chief of police Mark Chenery, says it's time the elders try to put an end to the tit for tat.

"It would be an excellent time for some of the leaders in the Hikutavake community to stand up and say enough is enough and to stop this violence because a lot of it is being perpetrated by probably some of our younger members of the community. Sometimes having consumed an amount of alcohol where perhaps normal common sense doesn't prevail."
