Authorities to discuss Fiji state of emergency

6:27 am on 26 January 2012

Authorities in Fiji will meet this morning to decide whether to declare a state of natural disaster following heavy flooding.

The main island, Viti Levu, has been hit by torrential rain this week, forcing the evacuation of about fifteen hundred people.

Two people are also confirmed dead.

The military government's spokesperson, Sharon Smith Johns, says officials will assess the situation this morning.

"It's actually just getting into those rural areas and finding out what is going on out there. Because it is extensive flooding, and it's across a very big area in the West, so once we've got all that information together, we'll be able to make a decision."
