PNG MP urges Australia not to back O'Neill

2:26 pm on 27 January 2012

A Papua New Guinea MP, Tony Aimo, has called on Australia to stop supporting a Prime Minister deemed illegal by the Supreme Court of Papua New Guinea.

Mr Aimo says the silence of the Australian government is indicative of its support of Peter O'Neill, who Mr Aimo says is an illegal Prime Minister and someone who repeatedly thumbs his nose at the highest court.

He questions whether Canberra backs Mr O'Neill because he is half Australian by birth and wonders if this means that Australia now finally has a puppet in government.

Mr Aino alleges that Australia knows Mr O'Neill chooses to sidestep the rule of law.

Mr Aino is part of the group of MPs backing Sir Michael Somare's claim that last month's Supreme Court ruling ended Peter O'Neill's four-month-long prime ministership.
