Fiji and China mark strengthening relations

6:34 pm on 3 February 2012

Fiji has marked strengthening relations with China through the launch today of the Fiji China Friendship Association in Suva.

The interim prime minister Commodore Frank Bainimarama says the genuine interest by the government of the People's Republic of China to work with Fiji without conditions has resulted in strong bilateral relations between the countries.

Fiji's Minister for Social Welfare, Women and Poverty Alleviation, Jiko Luveni, told members of the local Chinese community and local dignitaries that the association is a way of including the people in efforts to promote and strengthen understanding, friendship and cooperation between Fiji and China.

The launch follows this week's visit to Fiji by Russia's Sergei Lavrov, the first by a Russian foreign minister.
