Samoa Journalists divided over media regulator

11:35 am on 10 February 2012

The Journalists' Association of Samoa, or JAWS, is divided over a plan by the government to set up a body to regulate the media .

The Samoa Law Reform Commission Society's executive director, Leilani Tuala Warren, says the commission received a directive from the Prime Minister and Attorney General in November last year, to review the need for such a body.

The commission's task is to make a recommendation on the form it should take, and met with local media this week to get their input on the proposal, but no agreement was reached.

The Journalists' Association is holding another meeting on February 22.
