An American Samoan man who admitted to having a sexual relationship with his 16 year old step-daughter was yesterday sentenced to a 12 year jail term.

Last December the 49-year old pleaded guilty to rape and endangering the welfare of a child.

A rape charge in the territory is punishable from five to 15 years in jail.

The defendant's attorney pleaded for leniency but Associate Justice Lyle Richmond said it was a serious case.

The defendant was also ordered to register as a sex offender and undergo HIV testing.
