American Samoa's US Congressman, Faleomavaega Eni Hunkin, has introduced legislation to waive some requirements for U.S. nationals living in American Samoa wanting to be a U.S. citizen.
Currently U.S. nationals are required to follow the same procedures for naturalisation as legal permanent residents or green card holders.
Faleomavaega says these often lengthy procedures include the filing of an application, an interview, finger printing and the necessity that an applicant lives within the United States for a minimum of three months before applying for naturalisation.
He says procedures, such as the travel requirement, are unnecessary for U.S. nationals living in American Samoa.
