Papua New Guinea's first female opposition leader, Dame Carol Kidu, hopes to announce her deputy early next week.
Dame Carol was recognised as the leader and only member of the opposition by the speaker this week, filling a position that's been vacant since the August parliamentary vote that ended the government of Sir Michael Somare and installed Peter O'Neill as prime minister.
MPs loyal to Sir Michael have been occupying the non-aligned middle benches.
Dame Carol says she has been in discussions with someone from the Somare faction and is writing to the speaker about him joining her on the floor as her deputy next week.
She says a handful of other MPs have also approached her.
