Former Samoa police officer jailed for theft

A former Samoa police officer has been jailed for 2 years for ordering prisioners under his charge to steal.

Maletino Poli was accused of instructing prisoners at the Oloamanu Centre to steal coconuts and ta'amu which was used for ther prisoner's food.

He wascharged with three counts of theft, and convicted and discharged of one count, but sentenced to six months imprisonment for the second charge.

The former policeman was also convicted of the third charge involving the theft of 60 ta'amu or giant taro from a neighbouring plantation at Mulifanua where the Centre is located.

He was sentenced to two years at Tafaigata as a result of this offence.
