Councillors in Vanuatu capital to remain suspended until new legislation passed

4:30 pm on 20 February 2012

Vanuatu's Minister of Internal Affairs, George Wells, says the 18 Port Vila Municipal Councillors that he suspended in July last year will remain suspended until Parliament makes amendments to the Municipal Act next month.

Mr Wells suspended the local body politicians after a report on the financial state of the council showed debts of more than 11 million US dollars.

He appointed Olga Tari as a commissioner to run the city.

The Minister says the amendment will spell out the responsibilities of the councillors so that they respect their jurisdiction and don't interfere in the administrative duties of the council.
