The Commissioner of Education in the Northern Marianas says schools will continue to operate at reduced hours with restrictions on air-conditioning use despite complaints.

Two weeks ago the Commissioner ordered all public elementary schools in the CNMI to dismiss students betwen 30 and 60 minutes earlier each day in order to reduce power costs.

Schools were also told not to use their air-conditioning systems before 10 o'clock in the morning.

The Commissioner, Dr Rita Sablan says since the implementation of her directive, there have been complaints but says she has no intention to change it.

She says so far the saving in power utility charges has been 33 percent.
