Calls for PNG govt to overhaul SOEs

10:42 am on 21 February 2012

A former MP in Papua New Guinea is urging the State Owned Enterprises Minister Sir Mekera Morauta to overhaul the State Owned Enterprise's that do not deliver profits.

Sir Matiabe Yuwi, a former three term MP for Tari/Pori is calling for the sacking of the heads of the SOEs which have not been producing a profit.

Sir Yuwi told the Post Courier newspaper some of the SOE's have not even declared any dividends for many years.

He says there is no point keeping them if they cannot deliver profits to the people of Papua New Guinea.

Sir Yuwi says one classic example is the country's flag career, Air Niugini.

He says from what he learned from past years under the Sir Michael Somare regime and former SOE Minister Arthur Somare, the flag career was relying on the government for subsidies to operate as a corporation.
