Fiji eyes growing its own rice

7:09 pm on 27 February 2012

Fiji's Department of Agriculture is in talks with the Fiji Sugar Corporation to encourage sugarcane farmers to also try their hands at rice planting.

FijiLive reports the Agriculture Permanent Secretary Colonel Mason Smith as saying the talks are part of an initiative by the agriculture ministry to grow rice locally and cut down the country's reliance on imported rice.

The Fiji Sugar Corporation executive chairman Abdul Khan says it would do a lot of good for farmers.

He says as long as the land used for sugar is not compromised, sugarcane farmers are advised to plant other crops at the same time.
