Oxfam New Zealand is launching a fund-raising campaign to help rural Papua New Guineans get access to clean water.
The NGO estimates that at least 60 people, mostly children, die each week in PNG because of poor sanitation.
Its executive director, Barry Coates, says PNG is one of several Pacific countries struggling to meet the Millennium Development Goal of providing safe drinking water and improved sanitation.
He says solving this is a priority for the region and that's why they are seeking financial help from the New Zealand public.
"We need to collectively gear up and stop the unnecessary deaths of children and the suffering that is caused by a lack of clean water and proper sanitation, and it can be done, and can be done for very reasonable prices, because it's not the kind of thing that takes a lot of money. A little bit goes a long way."
