Tonga has recorded an increase in violence against women and children.

The government's Women's Division says reported acts of violence against women and children have doubled since 2007.

Radio Tonga reports Lepolo Taunisila, from the Ministry of Education Women Affairs Division, as saying 90 percent of violence acts reported in Tonga are against women and children.

She acknowledges amendments to the current law on violent acts against women and children, which she says enforce security for vulnerable groups.
