The American mining giant Freeport McMoRan is donating more than six million US dollars to fund the programmes of the Timika-based Human Rights and Anti-Violence Foundation, or Yahamak, in West Papua.

Freeport runs the huge Grasberg mine in the region.

The Jakarta Post reports the money is to be disbursed over the next two years.

A spokesperson for Yahamak says Freeport has been supporting the NGO for about ten years.

Hans Magal says the bulk of the funds will go towards education, community development and human rights issues.
