Amid woes for Kiribati, Nauru gets direct Fiji air link

Nauru's Our Airline has begun direct flights between Nauru and Nadi in Fiji.

The airline had operated a circuit from the island to Tarawa in Kiribati and then to Nadi but Fiji authorities banned the Kiribati link last September.

Air Kiribati had been operating the Our Airline plane on the Tarawa/Nadi link.

There has still not been any public explanation from Fiji authorities but the ban was invoked just after Air Pacific extended its services to Kiribati.

Last month the Nauru President, Sprent Dabwido, raised the issue with Fiji's interim Prime Minister, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, and his deputy, Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum.

He says he made it clear that Nauru wanted the resumption of the Tarawa flights because they are vital for the viability of Our Airline.

While there has been no progress on that matter, direct flights to Nauru from Nadi got the green light.
