Sport: Tongan rugby aiming to have new national body in place next month

Tongan rugby hopes to have a new national body in place by the end of April, following the expiration of the Tongan Rugby Union Authority.

The authority was set up two years ago by the Tongan Government to address the IRB's concerns over the way the union's constitution was being applied.

The Interim Executive Director of the Tonga Rugby Football Union, Aminiasi Kefu, says it's term finished at the end of last month and rugby is now in a transitional phase.

The authority will have a final AGM at the end of March and Aminiasi Kefu says if the new constitution gets the green light it will be put before an April AGM of the new Tonga Rugby Football Union.

"Hopefully we will be putting that in process in mid-April and then once that new constitution is adopted we will then convene a Special General Meeting under the new constiution for the Tonga Rugby Union, where the new directors will be elected and they will continue with looking after the administration of the Tonga Rugby Union."
