US aid agency supports PNG parties ahead of elections

6:48 pm on 7 March 2012

The United States Government aid agency is providing help to Papua New Guinea to strengthen political parties ahead of the June elections.

The US Ambassador, Teddy Taylor, says the 2012 elections are critical as they mark a generational shift from those who led the country to independence and the first generation of post-independence leadership.

He says the success of the elections will strengthen the foundations of democracy in PNG.

The USAID election assistance programme, which will be implemented by National Democratic Institute, will support the development and institutionalisation of political parties.
