Compensation claims after Tahiti power failure

11:57 am on 9 March 2012

Compensation claims are being prepared by businesses in French Polynesia after a power cut hit two thirds of Tahiti's electricity consumers.

The outage was triggered by a fault at the power company's Tipaerui station and lasted most of the afternoon.

The power failure stopped electronic transactions in the greater Papeete area, prompting businesses to close early.

Petrol stations stopped working and cinemagoers had to be reimbursed.
