7.1 quake near Vanuatu and New Caledonia

5:18 am on 10 March 2012

A 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck near Vanuatu and New Caledonia's Loyalty Islands just after eight o'clock Friday night.

The US Geological Survey says the quake's depth was 36 kilometres and was centred 60 kilometres northeast of Isangel in Vanuatu and 324 kilometres northeast of Tadine in New Caledonia.

The Pacific Tsunami Centre in Honolulu says there is no threat of a widespread tsunami.

However, it says earthquakes of this size sometimes generate local tsunamis that can be destructive along coast within 100 kilometres of the quake's epicentre.
