Papua New Guinea's bid to qualify for the Twenty20 cricket world cup has been dealt a blow following their opening round loss to Afghanistan in a qualifying tournament in Dubai.

Chris Kent top scored with 20 not out in the Barramundi's total of 112 for 6 from their 20 overs, after they'd slumped to 12-3 inside five overs.

New recruit Geraint Jones had a debut to forget, making a six-ball duck.

In reply captain Rarua Dikana and Hitolo Areni helped reduce Afghanistan to 35 for 3 before Mohammad Shahzad and Nawroz Mangal steadied the ship.

Mohammad Nabi top scored with an unbeaten 52 to lead Afghanistan to their target with six balls remaining.
