Female market vendors from the Rakiraki district in Fiji are to benefit from a new training programme to enhance their business skills.

The capacity building initiative was launched on Monday and is being run by the United Nations Development Programme in partnership with the Rakiraki Town Council and the Vaileka Market Vendors Association.

The Interim Special Administrator for RakiRaki Town Council, Seini Raiko, says the programme targets four strategic training areas across nine weeks.

"One is to strengthen the Market Vendors Association, another area is organising and strengthening the voice of women in the Market Vendors Association. Another area is improving the financial and economic security of the women vendors. And the last one is improving the engagement between the Market Vendors Association and the local government."

Seini Raiko says more than 300 market vendors and leaders from Rakiraki are expected to take part in the programme, including men, who have also been invited.
