A spokesman for Fiji's SDL party says the police have turned down the party's application to meet over the country's new constitution.
The party, whose leader Laisenia Qarase was ousted in the 2006 coup, had applied for a permit so party management could meet and discuss plans for its submission on the constitution.
The regime has promised the year-long process towards a new constitution will allow all voices to be heard.
A staff member of the SDL party says it is the first time the party had applied for a permit.
Despite the lifting of emergency law at the beginning of the year, permits are still required for meetings in Fiji under the Public Order Amendment Act.
The staff member, who did not want to be named for fear of intimidation, says it goes to show Fiji people are still being suppressed.
