Ancient latte stones in CNMI eyed as World Heritage sites

World Heritage designation is being eyed for the ancient Chamorro latte stones on Rota and Tinian in the Northern Marianas.

Latte stones were used as building supports by the ancient Chamorro people and are found throughout most of the Marianas.

The proposal to designate the area where the stones are found as a World Heritage site is part of the CNMI Tourism Master Plan for 2012-2016.

A team is trying to find out the requirements for submitting an application to UNESCO, which grants the World Heritage site designation.

Also incorporated in the new master plan are 20 tourism projects recommended for development in the next five years.
